Our good friend, Burko ’73 sent this absolutely fascinating article from Vanity Fair that takes a look at the inner workings of the Department of Energy.
In a previous article by our Regular Contributor DaveO, he made a case (albeit a rather weak and ideologically based argument) that Federal Employees are the resistance. Rather than being resistance, we see in this article, they are merely trying to inform the Trump administration what they do.
Case in point, much of the research undertaken by Energy is of the nature that the private sector is not willing to undertake it as the pay off is neither guaranteed or the expense is such the stockholder would cry foul.
Is the Department of Energy perfect, by no stretch of the imagination. Many mistakes have been made over the years. Hansford in Washington and the radioactive pollution that must be contained; Oak Ridge, Tennessee the same story to a lesser extent, and one that a little closer to home– Savannah River in South, Carolina.
