United States Pays Tribute to Dey of Algiers!

Haven’t we learned our lessons?

“Millions for tribute, but not one cent for defense,” appears to be the rallying cry for this administration.

The Iranian regime does not deserve a single cent from any disputed arms deal from the Shah’s era, or indeed from any agreement with the civilized world. We should be starving them for cash, not airlifting it to them.

If, as the administration says, the action was just and correct, why the secrecy? Why the midnight airlift in an unmarked plane? Can anyone give me a reasonable explanation that does not suggest that our own executive branch is actively supporting a sworn enemy?

I can’t say it any clearer than that, however painful it is.

About vmijpp

VMIJPP hails from the star city of the south, Roanoke, Virginia. A 1989 graduate of the Virginia Military Institute, he is a retired artillery officer in the United States Marine Corps, with time in both the active and reserve sides. He served in Iraq in 2004, and in Afghanistan in 2009-2010. He joined the magnificent OPFOR.com as a guest blogger from the now defunct but never uninteresting Rule 308, where he denounced gun control and other aspects of tyranny, and proclaimed the greatness of the United States. When the sun set on OPFOR.com, he migrated here with Keydet1976 and the others.

Over at my “home” blog – Grouchy Conservative Pundits – I use this as a signature line:

A final data point: On 20 January 2009, I did not on any firearms. Now, I do.

The Barbary wars analogy is an interesting one. Sometimes we paid ransoms, sometimes not. From this report, it’s pretty clear that the US was not able to defeat the Barbary states except as part of a larger coalition with European powers, most of whom had more of an interest in stopping the actions of these states within the context of a larger geopolitical moment–much like today.

Something else–this transfer of funds was made and publicly disclosed in January of this year–sure this isn’t all something to distract folks from Donald Trump’s bad week(s)? Wag the dog, anyone?
